Tech house

« Back to Glossary Index

A subgenre of electronic dance music that combines the groove, swing and four-on-the-floor kick of house with the stripped-back, machine-driven sound and darker textures of techno. It emerged in the UK, especially London, in the early-to-mid 1990s, where DJs and producers such as Terry Francis, Eddie Richards and Mr C, along with venues like The End club, pioneered the blend. It typically runs at around 120–128 BPM and focuses on punchy, rolling bass lines, crisp percussion, minimal melodies and short, catchy vocal hooks. In the late 2010s it became one of the dominant sounds in clubs and festivals worldwide, driven by hits such as FISHER’s “Losing It” (2018) and artists like Chris Lake, Solardo, Hot Since 82 and John Summit.
