A style of electro and progressive house designed for festival main stages and arena-sized clubs, which peaked in popularity between about 2012 and 2016. It typically runs at around 126–130 BPM and is built around long, tension-raising snare-roll builds that drop into minimal, punchy sections. Those drops are dominated by a heavy, distorted kick drum and short, simple synth stabs or lead riffs, often made with detuned, aggressive sounds. The emphasis is on crowd energy and impact over melody or groove. Tracks such as Swedish House Mafia’s anthems, Martin Garrix’s “Animals” (2013), and productions by Hardwell, W&W, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Showtek defined the sound, popularised at events such as Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival. Critics often dismissed it as formulaic, but it became one of the most recognisable sounds of the EDM boom.
