A light, relaxed subgenre of house music that became hugely popular around 2014–2016. It typically runs at around 100–115 BPM, slower than most house, and blends deep house grooves with sunny, summery instrumentation such as marimbas, steel drums, pan flutes, plucked synths and saxophones, along with soft vocals and smooth, laid-back drops. The term is often credited to Australian producer Thomas Jack, and the style was popularised by Norwegian DJ Kygo, whose remixes and singles such as “Firestone” (2014) helped define it. Felix Jaehn’s remix of OMI’s “Cheerleader,” Lost Frequencies’ “Are You with Me” and Robin Schulz’s productions brought it to global charts. Its easy-going sound strongly influenced mid-2010s pop music.
