UK garage

« Back to Glossary Index

Often shortened to UKG: a genre of electronic dance music that developed in London in the mid-1990s from American garage house and the soulful, vocal-led sounds of New York and New Jersey clubs. UK producers sped the tempo up to around 130–135 BPM and added shuffling, swung drums, chopped and pitched R&B vocal samples, and the heavy bass lines of jungle. Its best-known offshoot, 2-step, dropped the steady four-on-the-floor kick for skipping, syncopated rhythms. UK garage thrived on pirate radio and in clubs. Around 1999–2001, artists such as Artful Dodger and Craig David (“Re-Rewind”), MJ Cole, Sweet Female Attitude, So Solid Crew and Ms. Dynamite brought it into the charts. It was the direct ancestor of grime, dubstep and UK funky, and has seen several revivals since.
