A genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the UK, especially London, in the early 1990s, out of the breakbeat hardcore rave scene and Jamaican sound-system culture. It is defined by fast, intricately chopped and rearranged breakbeats at around 160–175 BPM, most famously the “Amen break” sampled from The Winstons’ “Amen, Brother.” Underneath those frantic drums sit deep, slow-moving sub-bass lines drawn from reggae and dub. Jungle often features ragga vocal samples, MCs and sound-system culture, and spread through pirate radio, dubplates and raves, with pioneers such as Shy FX, Goldie, Congo Natty (Rebel MC), M-Beat and DJ Hype. By the mid-1990s its sound was evolving into the sleeker, more structured style known as drum and bass, and the two terms are still sometimes used interchangeably.
