Future bass

« Back to Glossary Index

A genre of electronic music that emerged in the early 2010s, combining the rhythms of trap and dubstep with lush, emotional harmony. Its signature sound is big, detuned supersaw chords, heavily modulated and sidechained so they swell and pulse with the beat. These are paired with pitched vocal chops, bright melodies, wobbling synths and a half-time feel, typically at around 130–160 BPM. Producers such as Flume, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke and Cashmere Cat laid the groundwork, and labels like LuckyMe and Wedidit helped shape the scene. Later, artists such as San Holo, Louis The Child, Illenium and Marshmello brought it to festival audiences, and its warm, euphoric chord style became widely used in pop production in the second half of the decade.
