In electronic music, a genre that emerged around 2012 by fusing the sound of Southern US hip-hop with EDM. The name comes from Atlanta’s “trap” rap of the early 2000s (from T.I., Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy), whose production was built on Roland TR-808 drums: booming, long sub-bass kicks, rapid-fire triplet hi-hat rolls and sharp snares and claps. EDM producers took those rhythms, usually at around 140 BPM with a half-time feel, and combined them with festival-style builds and drops, brass stabs, vocal chops and aggressive synths. Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” (2012), RL Grime, Flosstradamus, TNGHT (Hudson Mohawke and Lunice) and Diplo’s projects helped define it. Trap’s drums have since become one of the dominant sounds in hip-hop, pop and EDM production.
