In music production, the stage in which the individual tracks of a song (drums, bass, synths, vocals, effects) are balanced and combined into a single, cohesive stereo recording. The engineer or producer adjusts levels and panning, uses EQ to give each sound its own frequency space, applies compression to control dynamics, and adds effects such as reverb and delay for depth and space, so that every element is clear and the track sounds powerful. In electronic dance music, special attention goes to the relationship between kick and bass, often managed with sidechain compression, so the low end hits hard on club sound systems. Mixing comes before mastering, the final stage that prepares the finished track for release. In DJ culture the word also means blending records together seamlessly during a set, usually by beatmatching and EQing two tracks so one flows into the next.
