Drum and bass, also written drum & bass or D&B: a genre of electronic dance music that developed in the UK in the mid-1990s from jungle. It shares jungle’s fast tempo, typically around 170–175 BPM, and its focus on breakbeats and heavy bass, but generally uses tighter, more precisely programmed drums and less of jungle’s ragga and reggae influence. The genre quickly branched into many styles. Producers and labels such as Goldie and Metalheadz, LTJ Bukem and Good Looking (atmospheric “intelligent” DnB), Roni Size & Reprazent (whose New Forms won the 1997 Mercury Prize), Andy C and Ram Records, and Pendulum and Chase & Status (bringing it to the charts) shaped its development. Major subgenres include liquid funk, neurofunk, techstep, jump-up and, more recently, a wave of chart-friendly “pop DnB.” It remains one of the UK’s most enduring dance music scenes.
