Resampling

« Back to Glossary Index

A production technique in which a producer records, or “bounces,” the output of a sound, often after heavy processing, back into a new audio clip, then edits and processes it further. Repeating this cycle lets producers build complex, evolving sounds: a synth bass might be distorted and filtered, resampled, chopped and pitched, then resampled again with more effects. It also saves computer processing power by turning effect-heavy instrument chains into simple audio. Resampling is central to the bass design of dubstep, drum and bass and other bass music, and is closely tied to the sampling traditions of hip-hop and jungle. In a technical sense, the term also refers to converting audio from one sample rate to another.
